Most welders I have known who work around ships have been certified by either a major builder or, as in the case of so many of the good ones, they have been certified by AMERICAN BRIDGE and it's a tough test. If you can't run a good bead between two 1" pieces of steel and the X-Ray shows it to be PERFECT then you can't pass the test which also included you using a cutting torch to cout out a 4"x4" SQUARE so perfectly it falls from it's own weight and the lines are straight.
