-disconnect the shifting cable at the motor, hook up your hose and while making dam sure nobody will be hit by the prop move the shift linkage at the motor itself and see what happens.with the cable end disconnected, use the shift lever and watch for movement in that cable. it should be good inch or 3 or movement and occur before the throttle cable has ANY movement.i dont think its the cable itself.......
Hi everybody
WE went to try out our boat today and after we got it started in neutral and moved leaver and neutral safety switch to go forward nothing happened. We tried going in reverse and nothing happened. Engine just stayed in neutral. When i got back home i took top cover of engine and had a look at it. So when the neutral switch is not clicked there is no movement in the engine untill i push the throttle all the way forward almost as far as it can go then a leaver moves in the engine. When the neurtal button is off the acceleration wire moves in the engine and at the very maximum the same leaver moves as was in neutral. Has anybody got any idea what the problem could be. How i could try and resolve it. Also how can i check the engine without having to go to the sea.

i dont think its the cable itself. i think its either disconnected at the control box, or whatever it is exactly that takes the movement from that specific motor (the exact year, or model numbers would be helpful too) and gets it down to the gearbox has come loose.

its probably a cheap fix parts wise, and fairly eaasily done too.
BUT, if its not, chrysler is definetly not among the better brands in marine power. if you got a good excuse to upgrade to a better brand with todays cleaner and more fuel effecient outboards, do so.

With out knowing what engine I can only guess. But it sounds like a control box issue not moving the cables.
